We’re excited to announce that the Justice in Funding Mission Pre-Conference will be returning again in 2016. Last year’s gathering went incredibly well and we are looking forward to seeing how God will direct us this year.
Join fellow ministry practitioners for a Justice in Funding Mission gathering to discuss solutions to the problem of “how mission funding and support raising keeps parachurch and church planting ministries White.” In today’s increasingly multicultural society, church planting networks, mission agencies, and parachurch ministries struggle to see their staff ranks represent the diversity they see in the world around them. One major contributing factor is the support raising model we use to fund ministry.
We’ll spend the day lamenting the consequences of the current system, thinking theologically about mission and funding, learning from people pioneering solutions, and networking to hear what others around us are trying. We hope this gathering will catalyze a community of ministers from all ethnic and racial backgrounds who are passionate to see the Church live out mission funding in a just and equitable way. We believe this could be the next step in the future of support raising, a future where everyone, regardless of gender, ethnicity, or social connection can fully participate in God’s global mission.
Justice in Funding Mission 2016 will take place on Wednesday, August 31, 2016 (the day before the national CCDA Conference) in Los Angeles. We are especially excited about two significant additions to the conference: Leroy Barber as our Keynote Speaker and an expanded focus on how support raising affects diversity in church planting efforts (not just parachurch mission agencies).
Leroy Barber, chair of the CCDA Board and long-time ministry leader, will be our keynote speaker for the event. The author of Red, Brown, Yellow, Black, White—Who’s More Precious In God’s Sight?: A call for diversity in Christian missions and ministry and the upcoming Embrace: God’s Radical Shalom for a Divided World, Leroy brings decades of experience tackling issues that keep ministries from achieving Kingdom diversity. We believe starting the day hearing from Leroy will set us on a trajectory for understanding, lamenting, and pursuing solutions to how support raising keeps our ministries white (despite our best intentions).
We’ve received feedback over the past year that support raising doesn’t just affect ethnic diversity in parachurch ministries, but in church planting networks as well. We want to expand the conversation this year to include some of the unique dynamics that potential church planters and church planting networks face in their desire to send out people who help the Kingdom of God expand through diverse local congregations. If you are thinking of planting a church in an urban, diverse area, you owe it to yourself and fellow ministers to attend Justice in Funding Mission 2016.
In the coming weeks we’ll continue to refine the content and experience of the conference. Please register as soon as possible so we can craft the conference specifically to the needs of ministry leaders who are able to attend.
We do have scholarships available, so let me know if that would help you or leaders within your ministry be able to attend.
